BMW plans to launch a V8 high-performance variant of the fifth-generation X5 in 2027, expected to be named the X5 M60 and positioned within the M Performance lineup. The model will feature a 48V mild-hybrid system but will not include a large-capacity traction battery, preserving the driving characteristics of its V8 gasoline engine. This new SUV will become BMW’s first production vehicle offered with five different powertrain options: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell. Additionally, BMW will introduce a plug-in hybrid performance variant, the X5 M60e, though it will not be sold in the North American market. A high-performance all-electric version, the iX5, is also under development. The full-fledged X5 M is expected to debut no earlier than 2028. Due to the upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations, output figures for some existing V8 models have already been reduced, and BMW has yet to announce the final power specifications for the X5 M60. In 2027, BMW will also unveil all-new generations of the X7 and 7 Series simultaneously, each offering V8-powered variants. Alpina will develop its own V8 models based on the next-generation 7 Series and X7. Rolls-Royce’s 6.75-liter V12 engine will continue production but will not be used in any BMW-branded passenger vehicles.
