Volkswagen Group has decided to phase out diesel models in the European market, with the new T-Roc becoming the first model to no longer offer a diesel option. The vehicle will be equipped with a new full hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) system derived from the existing “eHybrid” plug-in hybrid architecture but without a charging port. It features a 1.6 kWh battery and will be available in two power outputs—136 hp and 170 hp—with an official fuel consumption rating of 4.5 L/100 km. This hybrid system is also slated for future use in the Golf. According to Volkswagen’s roadmap, the company will launch its final generation of internal combustion engine (ICE) platforms in 2026 while simultaneously executing a major restructuring plan: it is considering closing up to four plants in Germany, cutting up to 100,000 jobs globally, and reducing capital expenditures by approximately 15% over the next five years. As of May 2026, diesel vehicles accounted for just 7.3% of the European market share. The move away from diesel stems not only from increasingly stringent EU emissions regulations but also from persistent technical issues with Volkswagen’s latest-generation 2.0 TDI diesel engine (codenamed EA288). Since its introduction in 2012, this engine has suffered frequent cooling system failures, including ruptured silicate bags clogging coolant circuits, leaks from thermostat housings and water pumps, and malfunctions of EGR valves and intercoolers. Sticking diaphragms in the mechanical water pump can cause engine overheating and even head gasket failure; wear in the high-pressure fuel pump generates metal debris that contaminates the fuel system; the SCR (AdBlue) system is prone to crystallization and failure under short-trip driving conditions; and high-output variants exhibit excessive oil consumption due to flawed piston ring design. By replacing diesel engines with its HEV hybrid system, Volkswagen marks the formal end of the diesel era in Europe.
