Recently, several new energy vehicle models have made noticeable changes to their door handle designs. New models such as the XPeng MONA L03, the all-new Li Auto L6, the Wey V9X, and the Wuling Xingguang L have adopted either semi-recessed or traditional externally mounted door handles. This shift is closely tied to a forthcoming national standard for automotive door handles, spearheaded by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)—the world’s first technical specification specifically addressing door handle safety. The new national standard clearly defines requirements for the structure of external door handles and the hand-operable space around them, mandating sufficient clearance for operation under all conditions. This aims to address issues associated with electric retractable door handles, including difficulties in identification, inconvenient operation, and hindrances to emergency rescue efforts. Additionally, the standard mandates that every vehicle door must be equipped with independent mechanical release mechanisms on both the interior and exterior, ensuring occupants and rescuers can manually open doors during extreme scenarios such as power failure, collisions, or fires. Previously, while hidden door handles—adopted by some new energy vehicles—offered benefits like improved aerodynamics and a sleeker exterior appearance, they revealed multiple safety concerns and usability challenges in real-world use. For instance, after severe collisions, low-voltage system failures could prevent door handles from deploying properly; in northern winters or snowy/rainy conditions, they were prone to freezing; and their complex electronic mechanisms led to relatively high failure rates. The implementation of this new national standard aims to enhance overall vehicle safety and improve emergency egress efficiency.
