Kiyoshi Nagane, Chief Engineer of the Toyota RAV4, acknowledged that the latest-generation RAV4 may have moved too aggressively toward touch-based controls, integrating functions previously operated via dedicated physical switches—such as fan speed, air vent direction, and seat heating—into the central touchscreen. Currently, the vehicle retains only a few essential physical controls, including the volume knob, climate temperature buttons, and driving mode shortcut keys. Nagane revealed that the development team had considered further reducing the number of physical buttons and continues to evaluate the minimum number that should be retained. He emphasized that Toyota is closely monitoring owner feedback and, if necessary, may reintroduce certain physical buttons in future model updates. Regarding the Chinese market, he noted that Chinese consumers prefer physical knobs and switches and are reluctant to rely solely on screen-based controls for all functions. Although driving mode buttons were retained to encourage users to explore different driving experiences, he admitted uncertainty about whether drivers would actually use these modes frequently.
