Hyundai Motor Group has announced the global rollout of an electric vehicle (EV) energy service called “All Day Energy,” based on V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) bidirectional charging technology. This service enables EVs to supply power back to homes, commercial buildings, other vehicles, or the public grid. EV owners can charge their vehicles during off-peak hours when electricity rates are low and feed power back to the grid during peak demand periods, leveraging time-of-use price differences to reduce charging costs and even generate revenue. Pilot programs for the service are already underway in South Korea, the United States, and the Netherlands. On Jeju Island in South Korea, 40 residents are participating in the country’s first V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) pilot project using Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9 models equipped with V2G capabilities. In the Netherlands, Hyundai is collaborating with energy company Vattenfall to test a business model involving up to 80 households, using Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9 vehicles paired with bidirectional chargers to support grid balancing. In the U.S., Hyundai is advancing V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) services through its “Hyundai Home” initiative, integrating EVs, residential solar panels, energy storage systems, and chargers to enable household energy self-sufficiency. Models such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 already feature built-in bidirectional charging capabilities, supporting V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) external power output and enabling V2H and V2G functions via compatible bidirectional chargers. The All Day Energy service aims to unify existing V2X initiatives across different markets under a consistent service standard and user experience. Actual earnings will vary depending on local electricity pricing structures and incentive policies, but as peak-to-off-peak price spreads widen and V2G-related regulations take effect, EV participation in energy markets—and the ability to earn revenue from it—is steadily becoming a reality.
