In the first half of 2024, more than 650 new car models were launched in China—averaging about 3.6 models per day. Among them, only around 100 were genuinely new or next-generation models based on entirely new platforms or architectures; the remaining 500+ were minor updates of existing models, such as changes to infotainment screens, wheel designs, or software upgrades. Data shows that 542 new models had already been introduced between January and May. According to executives at some automakers, the market buzz around a new model now typically lasts less than three months, while developing a single model usually takes over two years and requires an investment exceeding RMB 1 billion. Meanwhile, overall domestic auto sales have declined by approximately 20% year-over-year, intensifying competition. New energy vehicles (NEVs) are the primary driver behind this surge in new models. Rapid technological iterations in batteries, motors, electronic controls, intelligent driving systems, and smart cabins have significantly shortened NEV update cycles—some configurations become outdated within just six months, compelling automakers to frequently roll out upgraded versions to sustain market interest and convert orders. Industry analysts forecast that the total number of new models launched in 2026 will exceed 1,000, with NEVs accounting for over 70%. However, truly new models—those built on fresh platforms—will still number fewer than 200. Industry insiders note that automakers are widely adopting a “spray-and-pray” strategy, resulting in severe product homogenization and overly aggressive strategic targets, which has fueled widespread operational anxiety. Trade associations have urged companies to return to rationality, focus on differentiated development, and avoid short-term opportunism. For consumers, the flood of new models offers greater choice and faster access to cutting-edge technologies—but also leads to quicker obsolescence of vehicle configurations and accelerated depreciation shortly after purchase.
