XPeng Aims for Robotaxi Break-Even by 2027, Focuses on Global Expansion

In a media interview on July 24, XPeng Motors CEO He Xiaopeng stated that over the next decade, automobiles will deeply integrate with robotics technology and evolve into "robots on four wheels." He emphasized that the company's long-term growth driver lies in physical AI, rather than relying solely on expanding vehicle sales. Since last year, XPeng has officially entered the autonomous driving arena and aims to become the first Chinese automaker to fully develop its own Robotaxi solution in-house. The core advantage of XPeng’s Robotaxi business lies in the seamless integration of software, AI models, and vehicle hardware. Unlike Waymo’s model of operating its own fleet, XPeng provides partners across different regions with technology, AI systems, and vehicles, while local partners handle day-to-day operations. He Xiaopeng projected that XPeng’s Robotaxi service in Guangzhou could achieve per-vehicle breakeven as early as the second half of 2027, contingent on attaining sufficiently high vehicle density within specific operational zones. The company plans to launch a new vehicle model specifically designed for Robotaxi operations next year and gradually expand into overseas markets. Currently, XPeng is in talks with dozens of potential partners, more than half of whom are based outside China, and it expects the majority of its future Robotaxi operations to be located outside the Chinese market.
