David Moss, a resident of Tacoma, Washington, drove his Tesla Model 3 over 20,000 miles (approximately 32,187 kilometers) using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system without any manual interventions. Moss, who works in sales of LiDAR scanning equipment, began attempting to set a record for continuous FSD driving in December 2025, having already achieved 10,000 consecutive miles with zero driver takeovers at that time. He later completed a coast-to-coast journey from Los Angeles to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina—a distance of 2,732 miles—again without any interventions. Tesla featured this drive as an official user case study in March 2026. That particular run ultimately totaled 12,961 miles across 30 states before being interrupted by severe weather in Wisconsin in January 2026. Undeterred, Moss restarted his attempt. At the end of May 2026, accompanied by two companions, he departed from Horseshoe Bay near Vancouver, Canada, and drove 3,760 miles to the Tesla showroom in Halifax, Nova Scotia—all without taking control of the vehicle. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Vice President of AI Software, publicly congratulated him on X (formerly Twitter). In June, Moss continued extending his record and planned to complete a drive from the Canadian border all the way to the Mexican border. During this effort, he became the first user to surpass 10,000 miles on Tesla’s in-car “continuous autonomous driving odometer,” prompting Tesla to add a celebratory ribbon animation for the milestone. All driving data was recorded and verified through the FSD Database, created by Tesla blogger Omar Qazi. The database tracks every intervention with 0.1-mile precision by reading vehicle telemetry data. Tesla first introduced an “Autopilot Statistics” panel in FSD version 14.2, and the June 2026 release of version 14.3.4 added a real-time continuous autonomous driving counter that resets to zero upon any driver intervention. Achieving 20,000 consecutive miles without takeover demonstrates that the vehicle successfully navigated diverse and complex scenarios—including highways, city streets, construction zones, and Supercharger stations—entirely under FSD control. Moss stated that his goal was not merely to break records, but to validate FSD’s current capabilities through real-world driving.
