On July 28, FORVIA HELLA announced that its next-generation sun and rain sensor, developed for a leading Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturer, has officially entered mass production. Developed by the Electronics business unit of the FORVIA Group, the sensor integrates multiple functions, including rainfall detection, ambient light sensing, sunlight intensity measurement, and windshield temperature and humidity monitoring. Featuring a compact modular design and based on absolute measurement principles, the sensor accurately detects even light rainfall and automatically adjusts wiper speed to ensure clear driver visibility under varying weather conditions. For lighting control, it intelligently switches between low beams by monitoring infrared light ahead of the vehicle and visible light on the roof, reducing glare during nighttime oncoming traffic. Additionally, the sensor independently measures sunlight intensity on both left and right sides of the vehicle, providing zonal climate control data for the air conditioning system, while continuously monitoring windshield temperature and humidity to prevent fogging. Building upon the previous generation—which already integrated five functions: rain, light, solar irradiance, humidity, and HUD visibility—the new sensor offers further improvements in response speed and integration flexibility. It is well-suited for space-constrained vehicle platforms, delivering OEMs a more efficient system integration solution.
