Volkswagen South Africa’s motorsport division has unveiled an eighth-generation Golf race car specifically built for hill climb events, commemorating 75 years since Volkswagen entered the South African market. The vehicle shares virtually nothing with its production counterpart and made its debut last weekend, driven by Jonathan Mogotsi. Powered by an Audi-derived 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine, the car has been extensively modified to produce over 1,000 horsepower. Modifications include forged internal components, a larger turbocharger, increased boost pressure, a carbon-fiber intake system, and a custom exhaust system routed through outlets in the front bumper. Freed from road-legal requirements, the body has undergone a complete transformation, featuring an aggressive front bumper, wide fender flares, a large rear spoiler, and a diffuser to enhance aerodynamic performance. The car also receives an upgraded all-wheel-drive system and a reinforced AP Racing braking setup to effectively translate its immense power into grip.
