JV Automakers Accelerate Transformation: Local R&D, Supply Chain Overhaul, and Global Strategy Shift

Facing new challenges in the Chinese market, joint-venture automakers are collectively advancing their transformation, exploring strategies across multiple fronts—including formulating new strategic roadmaps, deepening local partnerships, revitalizing brand identities, accelerating product iteration, innovating collaboration models, exporting technology back to global markets, expanding overseas sales, and enhancing global channel coordination. Some companies have already shifted from “global vehicles, made in China” to “China-made vehicles for the world,” moving their business focus from “in China, for China” to “in China, for the globe.” Industry analysts note that over the next five to ten years, domestic Chinese brands will continue expanding their advantages in foundational technologies, end-market presence, and cloud-based services. However, leading joint-venture brands still retain room for growth—provided they can enhance product competitiveness, optimize costs, and implement deeply localized R&D. Currently, most joint ventures remain heavily reliant on overseas suppliers, with local procurement insufficiently integrated into collaborative development processes, resulting in a cost disadvantage. Accelerating supply chain localization and forging deeper ties with China’s industrial ecosystem are seen as critical pathways to rebuilding competitiveness. Executives from multiple joint ventures stated that the new energy vehicle (NEV) market has disrupted traditional competitive dynamics, necessitating a redefinition of brand positioning. Some companies are building dedicated NEV R&D capabilities, establishing localized decision-making mechanisms, and cultivating industrial ecosystems. Others emphasize the inherent strengths of joint-venture brands in core attributes such as safety and durability, arguing that opportunities remain even amid trends toward intelligent features and affordability. Additionally, some voices advocate designing globalized systems from the earliest R&D stages and reinforcing brand value through innovative partnership models. Multinational auto parts suppliers are also viewed as key enablers in supporting both Chinese automakers and joint-venture brands in their global expansion.
