On July 29, a BMW spokesperson announced that the company will cut thousands of jobs in Germany by the end of 2027 through a voluntary departure program. The layoffs will affect administrative and research & development departments, while production operations will remain unaffected. BMW has already reached an agreement with its works council on the severance package. According to informed sources, the automaker’s global workforce is expected to shrink by approximately 8,000 employees. This move follows BMW’s decision in June to lower its full-year profit outlook, primarily due to weaker-than-expected performance in the Chinese market, where sales have been continuously declining in recent years. CEO Milan Nedeljković stated that the company will accelerate and intensify its cost-cutting measures. BMW had previously hinted at a “slight reduction” in headcount in its 2026 annual report—a term that, by company convention, refers to a reduction of no more than 5% of its global workforce. The company currently employs around 150,000 people worldwide and is headquartered in Munich, Germany.
