Shanghai Enacts Surveying and Geospatial Information Regulations to Govern Mapping Activities for Intelligent Connected Vehicles

On July 29, 2024, the 32nd session of the Standing Committee of the 16th Shanghai Municipal People's Congress voted to adopt the "Shanghai Municipality Regulations on Surveying, Mapping, and Geospatial Information," which will take effect on October 1, 2026. Building upon the "People's Republic of China Surveying and Mapping Law" and related administrative regulations, the new regulations further clarify requirements for surveying and mapping activities, with a particular focus on regulating geospatial data collection by intelligent connected vehicles. The regulations aim to strengthen the application and security oversight of geospatial information, provide a legal framework to support high-quality development of the surveying, mapping, and geospatial information sector, and balance development with security.
