On July 29, Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving technology company, announced new features for its Ojai autonomous vehicle, specifically designed for ride-hailing services. These updates include the integration of Gemini in Waymo, a conversational AI assistant, and a redesigned in-vehicle user interface. The Ojai cabin features three screens, with content tailored to each passenger’s seat: a solo rider in the right rear seat gains full control options, while the other screens display simplified trip status or ambient media players. Passengers can interact with the AI assistant via voice commands or by tapping the Gemini icon on the screen to perform tasks such as adjusting the cabin temperature, finding nearby coffee shops, learning about landmark histories, checking trip details, controlling music playback, and even requesting a roadside stop by voice command. Waymo emphasized that Gemini in Waymo operates independently from its autonomous driving system, Waymo Driver—it does not control vehicle movement or route planning and has no access to real-time driving data. This in-vehicle interface overhaul marks Waymo’s first major redesign in several years, placing greater emphasis on trip information, music controls, and cabin/media settings menus. It also introduces a new “Calm Mode,” which dims the screens and displays only essential trip information. Waymo plans to invite more members of the public to experience the Ojai vehicle soon.
