On July 16, 2024, XPeng Motors launched the MONA L03 model, priced between RMB 123,800 and RMB 156,800, with a standard 400V high-voltage platform across all trims. On July 27, XPeng’s Senior Director of Powertrain explained in a social media post that the vehicle uses a 400V platform paired with a 3C-rate battery, enabling charging performance on standard fast chargers comparable to some 800V vehicles. He added that forcing an 800V architecture at this price point would necessitate trade-offs—either reducing battery capacity or cutting back on intelligent driving features and chassis components—thereby compromising everyday user experience. Therefore, XPeng opted to optimize the 400V platform’s performance and allocate cost savings toward enhancing features more perceptible to users. On the same day, a senior executive from Lynk & Co posted that the upcoming Lynk & Co Z20 would feature a “full-domain 800V” platform and challenged the notion that “400V is sufficient,” arguing it sacrifices generational technological advantages and product longevity. The executive further emphasized the comprehensive benefits of 800V systems—including faster charging, higher overall energy efficiency, lighter wiring harnesses, and better spatial packaging—and asserted, “Given the choice, who would still buy a 400V car?” He also liked a social media post highlighting an online debate between XPeng and Geely engineers. An 800V platform refers to a vehicle high-voltage system operating within a voltage range of 550V to 930V. Compared to a 400V platform, it reduces current under the same power output, lowering thermal losses and wiring weight while improving charging speed and energy efficiency. However, most public charging stations currently have limited power output, making it difficult to fully leverage the advantages of 800V systems. Moreover, “800V” vehicles on the market vary significantly: some implement full-domain 800V (with all high-voltage components supporting 800V), while others support 800V only in the electric powertrain or solely during charging. XPeng has previously developed 800V technology, including its silicon carbide-based 800V platform unveiled in 2021 and the SEPA 2.0 “Fuyao” architecture introduced in 2023.
