On August 5, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's head of AI, confirmed that the company will not reinstate the user-defined maximum speed feature in its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Previously, after the release of FSD v14, Tesla removed this functionality and instead introduced five "Speed Profiles"—including "Sloth," "Standard," and "Mad Max"—which collectively determine both the vehicle’s speed and driving behavior style, such as frequency of overtaking and lane changes. In earlier versions of FSD, users could manually set the maximum speed when using the system. Since the removal of this feature, some owners have reported difficulty finding a speed profile that aligns with their personal driving preferences while also adhering to posted speed limits. They also noted that the performance of these profiles has varied significantly across software updates—for instance, some users claim the "Standard" mode drives too fast, while "Mad Max" sometimes operates below the speed limit. Elluswamy described the custom maximum speed setting as an "anti-pattern" and reiterated Tesla’s current strategy of using AI training to better tailor FSD to individual user preferences. Nevertheless, drivers remain fully responsible for any traffic violations that occur while FSD is engaged. Currently, unexpected FSD speed behavior has become a common reason for drivers to take manual control of their vehicles.
