Domestic Passenger Vehicle Recalls Hit 252,100 in July, Up 503.1% Month-on-Month

In July 2026, the Defective Product Administrative Center of China's State Administration for Market Regulation released a recall notice stating that 10 passenger vehicle recall campaigns were conducted nationwide that month, affecting 252,100 vehicles from seven automakers—an increase of 503.1% compared to June’s 41,800 units. By component category, recalls related to airbags and seat belts accounted for 160,400 vehicles, or 63.63% of the total; instrument clusters and lighting systems accounted for 39,600 vehicles (15.71%); and suspension systems accounted for 33,500 vehicles (13.29%). Jaguar Land Rover (Ningbo) Trading Co., Ltd. recalled 83,800 vehicles, and Jaguar Land Rover (China) Investment Co., Ltd. recalled 77,300 vehicles—totaling 161,100 units—due to micro-corrosion in the driver-side airbag connector, which could prevent proper airbag deployment. XPeng Motors recalled 33,473 XPeng X9 vehicles produced between August 2023 and August 2025 due to reduced airtightness in the front air spring strut assembly under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, posing a risk of slow air leakage. Affected vehicles will receive a free replacement with an improved front air spring assembly. GAC Toyota recalled 15,266 bZ7 models due to abnormal software logic in the intelligent Bluetooth module, which could cause unintended gear shifts from Drive (D) to Neutral (N) during driving, resulting in power interruption. This issue will be resolved via an OTA remote software update. By brand origin, imported brands initiated six recalls totaling 178,700 vehicles (70.88% of the monthly total); joint-venture brands conducted three recalls covering 39,900 vehicles (15.83%); and domestic Chinese brands carried out one recall involving 33,500 vehicles (13.29%). By powertrain type, conventional internal combustion engine vehicles accounted for five recalls totaling 177,800 units (70.53%), while new energy vehicles accounted for seven recalls totaling 74,300 units (29.47%). Among these, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for five recalls involving 74,200 units, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for two recalls involving 100 units. From January to June 2026, approximately 1.65 million vehicles were recalled nationwide, representing a year-over-year decline of 68.8%.
