Stellantis' French subsidiary recently filed a patent for an innovative tailgate structure. The design divides the tailgate into upper and lower sections: the lower section folds downward like a pickup truck tailgate, while the upper section rotates upward and aligns flush with the roof. According to the patent documents, the mechanism includes a latching system to secure the tailgate in its open position, preventing vibration or unintended closure caused by aerodynamic forces at high speeds. Additionally, the tailgate may incorporate an electric assist mechanism to reduce user effort during operation. This solution aims to enhance the ability of compact sedans and hatchbacks to carry extra-long cargo. The design is currently at the patent stage, and there is no confirmation yet regarding mass production.
