Tata and Mahindra EVs Rank Top Two Globally in Energy Efficiency

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) released its 2025 Global Automaker Efficiency Rating report, evaluating the average energy consumption of pure electric vehicle lineups from 22 major automakers. According to the report, India’s Tata Motors ranked first with an average efficiency of 106 Wh/km, followed by Mahindra at second place with 113 Wh/km. Tesla and BYD trailed closely behind in third and fourth places, respectively. The average energy consumption across leading global new energy vehicle brands stood at 131 Wh/km. The Tata Tiago.ev (referred to as "Tata S" in the original text, likely a shorthand or typo) offers two battery options—63 kWh and 75 kWh—with a dual-motor setup delivering up to 313 horsepower. It achieves a certified maximum range of 665 km, supports DC fast charging at 110 kW, and can charge from 20% to 80% in 25 minutes. The Mahindra BE6 is available with 59 kWh and 79 kWh battery packs, offering a certified maximum range of 682 km and DC fast charging at 120 kW, with prices ranging from ₹189,000 to ₹269,000. The report attributes Tata and Mahindra’s high efficiency to their focus on compact crossovers and emphasis on efficiency and affordability. However, ICCT also noted that Tata vehicles have relatively slower charging speeds and lower rankings in terms of driving range. Currently, electric vehicles account for less than 5% of passenger car sales in India, compared to a global average of approximately 25%. In ICCT’s concurrent comprehensive rating of automakers’ electrification transitions, Tesla and BYD ranked first and second, respectively, while Tata and Mahindra placed around 15th and 17th.
