During the peak U.S. summer driving season, both gasoline and diesel prices have risen to their highest levels ever recorded for this time of year. According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), in the second week of August, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. reached $4.00 per gallon, while diesel hit $5.40 per gallon—both setting new records for the same period in history. By comparison, a year earlier, gasoline cost $3.20 per gallon and diesel was priced at $3.70 per gallon.
