According to reports on August 13, Chery acquired Nissan's Rosslyn plant near Pretoria, South Africa, in July 2024. The facility is slated to produce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and Jetour-branded models. The Rosslyn plant boasts a legacy of automotive manufacturing, a skilled workforce, and established export channels, with its original production lines primarily dedicated to internal combustion engine vehicles. The South African government has been attracting investments in electric and hydrogen vehicle manufacturing through tariff rebates, production-linked incentives, and investment tax policies. Local production helps reduce import duties on finished vehicles, brings automakers closer to consumers, and generates local employment, skills development, and investment in the parts supply chain.
