On August 12 local time, Swedish aerospace company Heart Aerospace announced that its X1 demonstrator aircraft completed its first manned flight at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York State, USA. With a wingspan of 106 feet (approximately 3,231 cm), a length of 76 feet (approximately 2,316 cm), and a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds (approximately 11,340 kg), the aircraft is the largest battery-electric airplane to have flown to date. The test flight was conducted under an Experimental Special Airworthiness Certificate (SAC-EC) issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Lasting approximately 27 minutes, the flight reached a maximum altitude of 1,100 feet (approximately 335.3 meters) above ground level and included evaluations of taxiing, takeoff, climb, maneuvering, and landing. During the flight, the fully battery-powered electric propulsion system delivered over 1 megawatt of power, with the total electricity cost for the mission amounting to roughly USD 5. The X1 serves as a full-scale validation platform for the company’s upcoming 30-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft, the ES-30, and is designed to verify flight characteristics, key technologies, and gather operational data.
