Audi unveiled a patent for a new range-extending system on August 14. The design employs two electric motors and an internal combustion engine (ICE), eliminating the standalone generator typically found in conventional range-extended systems. During normal driving, the battery powers the primary drive motor, which propels one axle; when quattro all-wheel drive is needed, the second motor drives the other axle. When battery charge is sufficient, both motors can drive the wheels and recover braking energy. As the state of charge drops, the ICE engages via a clutch with the second motor, converting it into a generator to recharge the battery. Under specific operating conditions, the ICE can also directly drive the wheels through the drivetrain path associated with the second motor. This architecture reduces the need for one motor, along with its associated power electronics, wiring harnesses, and mounting space—lowering material costs and weight. However, it requires additional mechanical components, linkages, and a clutch, resulting in greater structural complexity. Since the second motor cannot simultaneously generate electricity and drive the wheels, the system must switch dynamically between charging and all-wheel-drive modes, demanding more sophisticated control logic. Currently, this solution remains at the patent stage, and Audi has not announced any production vehicles, platforms, or timelines for implementation.
