In June this year, BYD sold just 243 fewer vehicles than Toyota, which has long held the top spot in Australia. Prior to October 2022, BYD had zero sales in the Australian market. As of July, electric vehicles accounted for 21.7% of new car sales in Australia, nearly tripling since January this year. Among the 110 electric vehicle models launched by Chinese automakers, Chinese brands now hold leading positions. In terms of pricing, taking hybrid and plug-in hybrid models as examples, the Toyota RAV4 starts at around AUD 46,000, while the BYD Sealion 6 starts at approximately AUD 43,000. Regarding delivery lead times, BYD customers wait no more than four weeks for their vehicles, whereas popular Toyota models can have waiting periods as long as six months. BYD’s plug-in hybrid pickup, launched less than two years ago, has already captured a 16% share of its local segment. Currently, fifteen Chinese automotive brands have entered the Australian market, continuously expanding their dealer networks and offering products across segments including passenger cars, SUVs, and pickups.
