Ferrari's First EV Prototype, Luce, Sells for $40 Million, Proceeds Donated to Charity

On August 17, 2024, at the RM Sotheby’s auction in Monterey, California, the first “Tailor Made” bespoke prototype of Ferrari’s inaugural all-electric model, the Luce (chassis number #0), sold for $40 million. This price vastly exceeded its pre-auction estimate of $1.1 million and significantly surpassed the model’s starting retail price of $600,000. Bidding began at $1 million and quickly escalated to $5 million, then $10 million, $25 million, before finally hammering at $40 million. The vehicle is equipped with four electric motors delivering a combined peak output of 1,035 horsepower—282 hp from the two front-axle motors and 835 hp from the two rear-axle motors—enabling a 0–60 mph acceleration time of 2.5 seconds or less. Under the European WLTP testing standard, it offers an estimated range of 330 miles (approximately 531 kilometers). The car features a bespoke Madreperla semi-matte paint finish developed exclusively for this model, using Ferrari Tailor Made pigments that shift chromatically from green to purple depending on lighting conditions and viewing angles. The interior is upholstered in Perla-colored Le Mans metallic leather sourced from Switzerland, marking the first time Ferrari has replaced traditionally black secondary interior elements with Grigio Corvara gray. Additional custom touches include unique wheels, exclusive white brake calipers, and a Ferrari badge set against a pure white background. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation, a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. According to a Ferrari spokesperson, the foundation has partnered with Save the Children and previously contributed funds toward rebuilding Aveson Charter School in Altadena, California, which was destroyed in the Eaton wildfire in early 2025. The buyer may be eligible to claim a tax deduction for a portion of the purchase under applicable regulations.
