According to the latest study by J.D. Power, in the second quarter of 2024, 12% of electric vehicle (EV) users failed to complete charging after visiting a public charging station—down from 14% in the same period of 2023 and the lowest level since the study began six years ago. The failure rate had reached 19% in the second quarters of both 2023 and 2022. The study, conducted from January to June 2024, gathered feedback from 6,594 owners of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Results showed that the Ionna charging network ranked first in DC fast-charging customer satisfaction with a score of 807 (out of 1,000), followed by the Mercedes-Benz Charging Network at 797, Rivian Adventure Network at 755, and Tesla Supercharger Network at 701. The industry average stood at 666. The study noted that newly deployed high-power fast chargers, larger charging stations, and destination-based charging points have helped reduce charging failure rates. DC fast-charging stations located at hotels received the highest satisfaction scores, followed by those at gas stations, convenience stores, and restaurants. Chargers situated in parking lots, underground garages, and at automotive dealerships received the lowest ratings. Additionally, data from the Alternative Fuels Data Center indicates that the number of EV charging stations in the United States grew by 12.4% between January 2025 and 2026.
