On the 21st local time, the Dutch Data Protection Authority announced it had fined U.S.-based ride-hailing company Uber €825 million. The authority stated that between 2018 and 2022, Uber used an automated system to monitor drivers' driving behavior and passenger ratings. If the system detected suspected fraud or low passenger ratings, it automatically deactivated drivers' accounts without any human review. This practice was found to violate the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), specifically provisions concerning the obligation to inform individuals and the right to human intervention.
