On August 21, 2024, a set of road-testing images featuring the 2028 Mercedes-AMG E 63 all-electric prototype was released, captured at Germany’s Nürburgring circuit. The vehicle features a three-box body structure, highlighted by a steeply raked windshield, a long hood, a clearly defined trunk lid, and flared wheel arches, giving it proportions akin to a luxury executive sedan. The front fascia adopts an upright grille area, echoing the design language of the all-electric GLC and C-Class. A low-positioned air intake beneath the front bumper channels airflow to cool the heat exchangers, front electric drive unit, and front brakes. A front lip spoiler and two side-mounted dive planes enhance high-speed stability. Along the sides, the prototype retains design cues from the current combustion-engine E-Class, avoiding overly rounded, low-drag styling. The test car rides on multi-spoke wheels at the front axle and dual-spoke wheels at the rear, leading media outlets to speculate that it is positioned as a high-performance sports model. Powertrain-wise, the new model abandons the V8 engine entirely, instead adopting YASA’s axial-flux motor technology. These motors are significantly more compact and lighter, offering higher power and torque density—weighing roughly half as much as conventional radial-flux electric drive units. Equipping multiple motors on both axles would enable millisecond-level torque vectoring to individual wheels. Additionally, integrating the battery pack into the chassis structure and using laser-welded cell casings will partially offset the weight penalty associated with large-capacity lithium-ion batteries.
