On August 24, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform "Truth Social" that starting January 1, 2027, the United States would impose a 50% tariff on all Canadian automobiles, trucks, auto parts, and steel. Trump claimed that Canada has long imposed high tariffs on American farmers and agricultural products, resulting in an annual U.S. trade deficit of $60 billion—a situation he described as "unsustainable and one that will no longer continue." He added that products manufactured in the United States would be subject to "zero tariffs." Trump also stated that 95% of Canada's business is tied to the U.S., whereas the opposite is true for America, emphasizing, "The U.S. doesn't need Canada—Canada needs the U.S."
