On the evening of August 23, a Li Auto owner in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province was driving a 2021-delivered Li ONE on an urban elevated expressway when the vehicle began making unusual noises and experiencing power loss. Shortly afterward, smoke-like vapor appeared from both sides of the car. The driver exited the elevated road, after which the vehicle broke down and was towed to a Li Auto Integrated Service Center. On the evening of August 24, Li Auto responded, stating that technical inspections confirmed the involved vehicle did not experience any combustion. The reported "smoke" was actually oil vapor caused by a leak of lubricant from the rear reducer. The vehicle had accumulated over 100,000 kilometers of mileage. As a mechanical component of the drivetrain system, the rear reducer’s failure is an occasional occurrence associated with long-term use and various usage-related factors. Under Li Auto’s lifetime warranty policy, the company has already replaced the entire rear reducer assembly free of charge. The vehicle has been fully repaired and returned to normal operation. The removed component has been sent back to the factory for further disassembly and analysis. Mr. Xie, Head of User Experience for Li Auto in Zhejiang Province, stated that they can confirm the fault was not caused by improper use by the owner. During the repair period, Li Auto provided the owner with alternative transportation arrangements and will continue communicating with the user to address any vehicle-related concerns.
