NVIDIA Adjusts HBM4 Strategy: Boosts 8-Stack Output, Optimizes Rubin GPU Memory

On August 26, NVIDIA requested its upstream suppliers to increase the supply ratio of 8-high (8Hi) stacked HBM4 memory products while reducing the proportion of 12-high (12Hi) stacked HBM4 memory. This move aims to lower stack height, enabling more HBM4 stacks to be produced from the same amount of HBM4 DRAM dies, thereby boosting the delivery volume of Rubin GPUs. The 12Hi stacking configuration suffers from higher heat generation and thermal density, which imposes greater yield pressure on high I/O HBM4E memory. In contrast, 8Hi HBM4 helps reduce DRAM die loss during manufacturing. Additionally, NVIDIA is considering lowering the HBM memory configuration for the Rubin Ultra to alleviate HBM memory supply shortages.
