Toyota Demands Price Cuts from Japanese Suppliers as Steel Costs Rise for First Time in Four Years

On August 27, Toyota Motor Corporation disclosed that it has requested its parts suppliers to lower prices in the second half of fiscal year 2026, with the extent of the price reductions to be individually determined based on each supplier’s business conditions. Toyota China stated that this move applies solely to the Japanese market and is unrelated to China. According to informed sources, Toyota has reached an agreement with Nippon Steel, Japan's largest steelmaker, to raise steel procurement prices by approximately ¥12,000 per ton (about RMB 507.1) starting in October—the first price increase in four years. Steel procurement prices will remain unchanged in the first half of FY2026 (April to September). Toyota conducts steel price negotiations twice a year, aligning with the first and second halves of its fiscal year. As Toyota procures steel in bulk—including on behalf of its affiliated parts manufacturers—its pricing talks with Nippon Steel are known as the "champion negotiations," serving as an industry benchmark that influences other Japanese manufacturing sectors, including electronics and shipbuilding.
