On August 29, 2024, the Italian government announced it would withdraw three restrictive measures previously imposed on drivers aged 85 and older. These included a ban on driving on highways, a restriction limiting driving to within 100 kilometers of their primary or habitual residence, and a requirement for a zero blood alcohol concentration while driving. According to a statement from Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, these provisions have already been removed from Part II of the relevant revised text, and residual references in the table in Part V will also be deleted in the final version. The decision was made at the request of Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. Under current Italian regulations, driver’s licenses are valid for 10 years until age 50, 5 years between ages 50 and 69, 3 years between ages 70 and 79, and 2 years from age 80 onward. Drivers aged 80 and above must renew their licenses every two years; those who let their license expire for more than five years must pass a practical driving test to regain driving privileges. The Ministry of Transport stated it plans to introduce a more comprehensive medical assessment system for individuals aged 85 and older to evaluate their physical and cognitive fitness to drive, though specific procedures have not yet been finalized. An earlier draft proposal stipulated that elderly drivers who consented to grant local medical boards access to their electronic health records could request a reassessment of the restrictions, whereas those who only completed routine medical check-ups would automatically be subject to the restrictions upon turning 85.
