On September 1, 2024, Dongfeng Motor announced that its Mach Power R&D team recently completed a rotor burst-speed test on a dynamometer, achieving a burst speed of 54,461 rpm and a rotor surface linear velocity of 365 m/s—exceeding Mach 1 (approximately 340 m/s). The test was jointly conducted by Dongfeng’s Mach Power R&D team and the Wuxi Research Institute of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Compared to the dynamometer test data from 2023, when Dongfeng Mach Power unveiled its 200 kW high-speed motor (with a speed of 34,447 rpm and linear velocity of 227 m/s), the rotor’s linear velocity in this latest test has increased by approximately 60%. Dongfeng stated that key technical challenges in developing ultra-high-speed motor rotors include rotor structural design, carbon fiber winding material processes, and ensuring structural strength and heat dissipation under ultra-high rotational speeds. These aspects have been validated through the dynamometer burst-speed test, although specific technical details and test conditions were not disclosed. Mach Power is Dongfeng Motor’s proprietary passenger vehicle powertrain brand, launched in 2021. It encompasses three technology platforms: Mach G (gasoline), Mach PHREV (plug-in hybrid), and Mach E (pure electric). Several products under this brand have previously received awards such as the China Automotive Technology & Research Center’s “China Heart” Top 10 Engines and “World’s Top 10 Electric Drivetrains.” It should be noted that the reported 54,461 rpm represents the burst speed recorded during the dynamometer test—the maximum rotational speed at which the rotor structurally fails under continuous acceleration. This figure is used to verify the design safety margin and does not represent the rated operating speed of any production motor.
