On August 22, Tesla announced it will unveil its autonomous ride-hailing vehicle, the Cybercab, on September 3, 2026, in Austin, Texas. The two-seater features gull-wing doors and is designed without a steering wheel, pedals, or side mirrors, relying entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system for all driving decisions. The first production-model Cybercab rolled off the assembly line at Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas in February 2024, with mass production commencing in April. The Cybercab received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions compliance certification at the end of May and secured authorization from the state of Nevada to operate a large-scale autonomous fleet. On August 20, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles approved Tesla to deploy up to 5,000 Cybercabs over the next 12 months in Clark County—the county encompassing Las Vegas—replacing a previous temporary permit that limited operations to just 10 test vehicles. The vehicle has already completed multiple public road tests in Austin without safety drivers. Tesla employees and local emergency responders have participated in trial rides and training sessions focused on handling emergency scenarios. Following the official launch event, the Cybercab will be integrated into Austin’s local autonomous mobility network and gradually opened to the public for ride experiences. The Cybercab will not be sold to individual consumers. With a target per-unit cost under $30,000, it is intended exclusively for Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing service.
