On September 10, Pony.ai and autonomous mobility company Verne announced the launch of fully driverless Robotaxi passenger trials on public roads in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. The two companies stated this marks the first such test in Europe. The initial test route spans 22 kilometers, connecting Verne’s headquarters with Franjo Tuđman Airport, and will gradually expand to cover Verne’s operational area in Zagreb. The testing complies with Croatian regulations and has obtained all required approvals. This trial comes more than five months after Pony.ai, Verne, and Uber jointly announced their partnership and launched a commercial Robotaxi service. Under this co-built fleet model, Pony.ai provides full-stack autonomous driving technology, Verne handles localized operations, and Uber offers platform access. Since its launch in early April, the fleet has accumulated over 200,000 kilometers of operations, completed thousands of rides, and achieved an average passenger rating of 4.7 out of 5. The test vehicles are Pony.ai’s seventh-generation Robotaxis, equipped with a self-developed L4-grade domain controller based on the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX platform and running DriveOS, a safety-certified operating system. The vehicles feature 360-degree sensor coverage, multiple redundancies, and fail-operational capabilities. Pony.ai noted that it already operates fully driverless commercial services in first-tier Chinese cities and has logged over 100 million kilometers of global road testing, including more than 40 million kilometers in fully driverless mode. Pony.ai plans to deploy over 4,000 Robotaxis overseas, including a joint initiative with Uber to deploy more than 2,000 units across Europe. The company aims to operate a global fleet of over 3,500 vehicles by the end of 2026, serving more than 20 cities.
