General Motors is in the early stages of developing its next-generation battery cells. Kurt Kelty, GM’s Vice President of Batteries and Sustainability, said the company is building a supply chain with plans to achieve full localization within two to three years. The battery cells Kelty referred to are expected to be used in energy storage systems (ESS), which are stationary units designed for homes and businesses. A spokesperson reiterated that the company also plans to prioritize localized production of battery cells for its future all-electric vehicles. Kelty stated that sodium-ion technology holds greater potential than lithium iron phosphate (LFP).
