On September 14, Zurich Airport partnered with Chinese autonomous driving company WeRide to deploy two Level 4 fully driverless electric shuttle vehicles at the airport. The project, jointly advanced by Zurich Airport and WeRide, has been implemented in phased testing since its launch in March 2025 to comply with EU regulations, safety requirements, and technical conditions for Level 4 autonomous driving. These shuttles operate without onboard human safety drivers and are monitored remotely, with remote operators able to take manual control when necessary. Zurich Airport stated that this operational model has already met the project's defined Level 4 autonomous driving objectives. Raphaël Glaesener, Senior Innovation Manager at Zurich Airport, said that during the initial phase of operation, the Level 4 shuttles will not carry passengers. After approximately four weeks of testing, airport staff will be able to use the fully autonomous shuttles. In this first phase, the vehicles will primarily transport airport employees along fixed routes that do not cross aircraft taxiways or runways. This autonomous shuttle deployment is part of Zurich Airport’s pilot program aimed at reducing carbon emissions from daily airport operations through electrification. Employees from partners Swissport and Krummen Kerzers will also participate in the testing, with each company assigning remote operations monitors to oversee vehicle operations.
