On the evening of September 17, 2026, two people familiar with the matter revealed that XPeng Motors plans to expand its technology export scope beyond Volkswagen to other overseas automakers. One of the sources said XPeng has already approached certain potential partners, who have shown interest in its technologies. According to the plan, XPeng will offer other companies its electronic and electrical (E/E) architecture, intelligent cockpit systems, Turing AI chips, and advanced driver-assistance software. Potential clients include overseas software developers and automotive component suppliers. The other source indicated that XPeng is preparing to broaden its technology licensing and customization business by incorporating Robotaxi, robotics, and other physical AI applications into its service portfolio, along with providing Robotaxi operational deployment solutions. Approximately six months ago, XPeng established a strategic commercialization team to explore new technology collaborations and other business opportunities. XPeng’s partnership with Volkswagen began in July 2023, when Volkswagen acquired a 4.99% stake in XPeng for approximately USD 700 million (equivalent to about RMB 4.706 billion at current exchange rates). The collaboration covers electric vehicle platforms, software, and E/E architecture. The first jointly developed model—the all-electric SUV named Vento 08—equipped with XPeng’s intelligent cockpit system, smart driving technologies, and Turing AI chip, entered mass production in March 2026, taking 24 months from the start of the collaboration to production launch. XPeng did not achieve profitability in the first two quarters of this fiscal year. In the second quarter of 2026, XPeng’s vehicle sales revenue remained largely flat, while its automotive gross margin declined from 14.3% to 12.1%. Revenue from services and other businesses nearly doubled, with the gross margin for this segment rising to 75.1% from 53.6% a year earlier. During the earnings call at the end of August, XPeng’s management stated that the growth was primarily driven by technology development services provided for the Volkswagen collaboration project, as well as increased sales of components and accessories.
