On September 19, at the opening ceremony of the 2026 TEDA Automotive Forum, Wang Fang, Chief Scientist at China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), delivered a speech. Wang disclosed the following industry data: In 2025, global new energy vehicle (NEV) sales reached 20.7 million units, with a penetration rate of 23.6%. China accounted for 13.36 million units, representing 70% of the global total and achieving a domestic penetration rate of 50%, ranking first globally for the eleventh consecutive year. Domestic brands held a 75% share of China’s NEV market. The penetration rate of L2-level passenger vehicles rose from 25% in 2021 to 64.9% in 2025 and has now exceeded 70%. In the battery sector, Wang stated that solid-state technology has become a new competitive frontier in the global battery industry. Japan and South Korea are primarily focusing on sulfide-based technologies, the U.S. on polymer-based approaches, and Europe on oxide-based systems, while Chinese enterprises are pursuing multiple technological routes simultaneously. In charging infrastructure, peak charging power for certain vehicle models has already reached 300–500 kW. As of June, the total number of charging facilities nationwide surpassed 23 million, with the proportion of high-voltage charging piles supporting 750 V and above (including 1,000 V+) rapidly increasing. Among the five major challenges, kilovolt-level high-voltage architectures, fast-charging safety across the full vehicle lifecycle, and flexible charging capabilities are central. In the field of intelligent connected vehicles, technological development is advancing along four directions: intelligent driving, intelligent cockpits, chassis systems, and vehicle-road-cloud integration. Key focus areas include end-to-end large models, multimodal interaction, drive-by-wire chassis, and C-V2X. Wang also noted that China's NEV exports are increasingly encountering accelerated construction of triple barriers related to tariffs, green regulations, and data governance.
