GM to Roll Out 3D Printing Additive Manufacturing Across More Than 20 Plants

Stratasys revealed that its additive manufacturing solutions will be rolled out across more than 20 General Motors (GM) manufacturing facilities. Currently, GM has already deployed the Stratasys platform in multiple plants across North and South America, enabling local design and printing of fixtures. At GM, 3D printing is primarily used for producing fixtures, gauges, and similar tools. By leveraging FDM printers and engineering-grade materials, teams can produce prototypes onsite, reducing iteration cycles from weeks to hours or days. Before deployment, printed parts must undergo validation under real-world operating conditions to verify material properties, dimensional accuracy, and durability. When replicating parts across facilities, governance of digital inventories becomes essential—covering version control, access permissions, traceability, and retirement policies. This shifts the focus of additive manufacturing management from “physical part inventory” to “digital files plus qualification.” Stratasys did not disclose specific figures such as total investment.
