Researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University have discovered a new type of cross-domain cyberattack. Without breaching the power communication network, attackers can manipulate electric vehicle charging navigation systems to direct large numbers of vehicles to the same charging station, causing charging demand to become highly concentrated in a short period, which may trigger localized blackouts or undermine grid reliability. The study shows that such attacks can originate outside the distribution network and propagate through EV charging behavior, ultimately threatening the safe operation of the power grid.
