On October 30, 2026, Toyota Motor announced that it will launch testing and validation of a self-driving taxi fleet based on the Toyota bZ4X in Japan in 2027 in partnership with Alphabet's Waymo. Toyota expects the partnership to bring Japan its first fully autonomous ride-hailing service using locally produced mass-market vehicles. Toyota will complete the entire bZ4X Robotaxi production process, including the integration of Waymo's autonomous driving hardware, at its Takaoka plant. The special-edition bZ4X is equipped with automatic doors, a power tailgate and ambient lighting. Waymo's bZ4X Robotaxi fleet is planned to expand to other markets such as the UK in the coming years. Beyond commercial mobility services, Toyota and Waymo will continue to explore the application of autonomous driving technology in Toyota private vehicles.
