On October 30, Volkswagen said in its latest financial report that the company needs to arrange capital investment more prudently. On the earnings call, David Powels, CFO of the Volkswagen brand and the group's core brand cluster, confirmed that development of the Volkswagen brand ID. Golf has been suspended until the necessary funding can be secured. Volkswagen said the halt is a temporary measure and development can continue once funding is in place. The timing for resuming development and the impact on the new model's launch have not yet been determined. The ID. Golf had originally been expected to go on sale in the late 2020s. The launch of Volkswagen Group's next-generation Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) has been delayed. The platform was originally planned for a large number of the group's pure electric products, but was postponed due to software development challenges and rising R&D costs. Under the current plan, Audi and Porsche are expected to be the first to launch models built on the SSP platform. Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer previously said there is no need to launch a pure electric Golf in 2028, and that a market launch around 2030 is more realistic. Volkswagen has previously acknowledged that the profitability of electric vehicles in the same class is lower than that of gasoline cars. Volkswagen previously developed the e-Golf based on the seventh-generation Golf. The car went on sale in 2014 and was discontinued in 2020. The ID.3 was developed as a pure electric vehicle, completed a mid-cycle refresh earlier in 2026 and was renamed the ID.3 Neo. Under Volkswagen's original plan, the ID.3 Neo was to pave the way for the return of the pure electric Golf. The current Golf is expected to receive another facelift in 2027, with production moving from Wolfsburg, Germany, to Puebla, Mexico.
