A research team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), in collaboration with Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Dongguk University, has successfully developed a novel design approach for core materials in all-solid-state batteries. This method utilizes low-cost raw materials and achieves high performance and safety without requiring expensive metals. Conventional lithium-ion batteries employ liquid electrolytes, posing risks of fire and explosion; while all-solid-state batteries are inherently safer, they often suffer from poor lithium-ion mobility within solid electrolytes, necessitating costly materials or complex manufacturing processes. The newly developed approach overcomes these limitations through purely structural design optimization, significantly enhancing ion conductivity. This breakthrough holds promise for overcoming the cost and performance barriers of all-solid-state batteries, accelerating their adoption in applications such as electric vehicles.
