Singapore-based startup Flint recently unveiled a new type of "paper battery" made from plant-based cellulose, offering advantages such as compostability, non-toxicity, and a simplified supply chain—potentially enhancing the sustainability of energy storage systems for electric vehicles. Built on a foundation of cellulose fibers, the battery is not only biodegradable but also effectively suppresses dendrite formation in lithium-ion batteries, thereby extending their lifespan. In recent years, as automakers increasingly demand more environmentally friendly supply chains, research into using cellulose in critical battery components—such as separators—has intensified. A multinational study published in February 2025 further confirmed that cellulose derivatives can serve as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based separators, improving both battery safety and performance while reducing environmental impact. Although the technology still has some way to go before meeting automotive-grade standards, it offers a promising new direction for the future development of green batteries.
