Germany Plans Up to $7,000 EV Subsidy Targeting Low- and Middle-Income Households

According to Germany's Bild newspaper on January 16, the German government plans to offer subsidies of €1,500 to €6,000 (approximately $1,700 to $7,000) to low- and middle-income households purchasing electric vehicles (EVs), aiming to boost the sluggish EV market. The subsidy will apply to new vehicles registered starting January 1, 2026, and the application platform is expected to launch in May 2026. The government has allocated a budget of €3 billion for the period from 2026 to 2029, with a target of subsidizing 800,000 vehicles over three years. Although the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) forecasts that this measure will drive a 17% increase in EV registrations this year, reaching one million units, Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, head of the Center for Automotive Research in Germany, criticized the subsidy as "economically meaningless," arguing that the current growth in EV market share is primarily due to falling prices. Details originally scheduled for release on January 16 have been postponed to January 19, and the Federal Ministry for the Environment has so far declined to comment.
