At 10:19 a.m. local time on January 19, a massive multi-vehicle collision occurred on Interstate 196 southeast of Grand Rapids in western Michigan due to a severe snowstorm. Strong winds—with gusts reaching 25 to 40 miles per hour—and blowing snow drastically reduced visibility on the roadway to less than 400 meters, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving over 100 vehicles, including 30 to 40 semi-trailer trucks. The accident has resulted in 9 to 12 injuries, with no fatalities reported so far. The affected section of the highway has been partially closed, and authorities are currently conducting investigations and rescue operations.
