After filling up his Lexus at a Safeway gas station, a man reported that his vehicle’s engine suddenly began making an unusual “clicking” noise accompanied by a low rumbling vibration. He posted a video on TikTok seeking help, saying, “Just filled up at Safeway and now my car is acting weird.” The video has garnered over 26,000 views. Experts noted that poor-quality or stale gasoline could potentially damage an engine and suggested that if fuel quality is suspected, drivers dilute the tank’s contents by adding fresh gasoline in a 3:1 ratio and use a fuel system cleaner additive. However, most commenters believe the knocking sound is more likely caused by engine rod knock or an oil-related issue rather than bad fuel. AAA reminded drivers to refuel only at reputable stations, verify the correct fuel grade, and promptly address any unusual vehicle symptoms.
