Proton's dedicated electric vehicle (EV) plant in Tanjung Malim, Malaysia, has recently commenced operations. The facility began local production this month of its first EV model, the eMas 7, in CKD (Completely Knocked Down) form—marking the first EV to roll off the new production line. Previously, the eMas 7 had been sold in Malaysia as a CBU (Completely Built-Up) import from China since its market launch in December 2024. Located within Proton’s existing manufacturing complex, the new EV plant broke ground in February 2025. Its Phase 1 capacity stands at 20,000 units per year, with room for future expansion. Purpose-built for EV production, the facility features dedicated zones for battery assembly, high-voltage safety, and electrical testing. The production line supports multi-platform co-production and is equipped with digitalized manufacturing and warehousing systems. The project leverages Geely’s technology platform, with Geely providing comprehensive support in equipment selection, installation and commissioning, and staff training to ensure the plant meets global EV manufacturing standards.
